THE ERA OF MATTHIAS CORVINUS IN EARLY MODERN ENGLISH TEXTS

Abstract

I aim to map references to Matthias Corvinus in early modern England. I am primarily interested in literary and historical records that mention the King of Hungary and the reasons why early modern authors drew on the figure of Corvinus and the Kingdom of Hungary. I will examine those records related to the Turkish expansion in the 16th century which reflect contemporary fears caused by the Ottoman Empire and highlight the contrasts between Christianity and Islam.
