THE CASE OF THE PHONY JOURNALIST AND THE INDULGENT EDITORS
László Cholnoky on the pages of Egyenlőség, Múlt és Jövő and Remény
Abstract
Throughout his life, László Cholnoky (1879−1929) was in close contact with Jewish journals such as Egyenlőség [‘Equality’], Múlt és Jövő [‘Past and Future’] and Remény [‘Hope’]. These journals published much more of his original texts than other Budapestian newspapers or journals, partially thanks to his “emancipatory tales” which he wrote specifically for them. In the beginning of the interwar period Cholnoky used these periodicals for publishing columns about literary political issues. Although Cholnoky drifted to the periphery of literary life only after 1925, prominent contemporaries considered the author a philosemite because of these columns already by 1920, making it more difficult for him to publish and maintain his existence. The study presents Cholnoky’s work in these papers and an interesting metamorphosis of a narrative published in Egyenlőség and Múlt és Jövő.
