MEANINGS BASED ON ZENTA IN THE DANYI ZOLTÁN’S NOVEL A RÓZSÁKRÓL (ABOUT THE ROSES)
Abstract
A characteristic ambiguity of Zoltán Danyi’s novel is that the storytelling perspective is quite “navel-gazing”, while unexpectedly and significantly the Vojvodina Hungarian horizon of the storyteller comes into the limelight. My research topic is not without any risk: it attempts to match meanings and certain elements of space in a work of fiction, while these meanings can evolve only in interpretations that identify the model of the anonymous town with Senta (Zenta) in the novel, and this way also activating meanings which follow from the structure, size and distances, space hierarchy and microculture of the settlement. Starting from the fact that while in the process of creation of fictional worlds, the recipient’s experiences from other cultural subsystems get inevitably activated, it seems relevant in the readings of Danyi’s novel to picture the possible meanings of merely named or only suggested silent locations. The narrator’s craggy mechanisms of selection, his meaningful silence and reticence further encourage inquiries into laconic utterances related to the place.
